With limited resources for training it can be frustrating to attend a course that does not meet your training needs. In an attempt to prevent this from happening we would ask you to bear in mind the following questions when trying to decide whether this course is right for you.
Who is the course aimed at? Any SLT who maybe interested in using a stethoscope as a screening tool to enhance their dysphagia assessment.
Should I already have some experience using cervical auscultation? Not necessarily, You will need an interest in developing your knowledge and skills into its effectiveness as a dysphagia screening tool.
I have been on other courses that have discussed Cervical Auscultation and I am unconvinced about its clinical applicability. This course aims to explain in detail what you hear and what actions to take depending upon the results.
I work mainly with Children will I get something out of this course? Auscultation is useful anywhere in the field of dysphagia, perhaps even more so with children as it is difficult to get videofluroscopy and FEES for them.
I use the hospital stethoscopes from time to time when screening for dysphagia but I am not sure I can interpret what I hear. It is really important that the stethoscope you use has certain qualities and we will be discussing in detail what these qualities are.
I use cervical auscultation all of the time will you be teaching anything new? If you use it all of the time then you will know what you are listening to. You may not have heard the sounds played on a CD and it could be useful to decide if you hear what everyone else hears.
