Background

We have been running post graduate paediatric/ALD dysphagia courses since 2000. We have changed the design of the course we run to encourage greater reflective practice and more self directed learning to meet the needs of the changing NHS. This new course has gained college registration.

The course will be a mixture of taught sessions and work based learning. The taught days will be a mixture of lecture, case presentation, demonstration, practical activity. There will then follow a period of work based learning and consolidation of skills when delegates will be required to complete a self directed learning programme (SDLP).

Self Directed Learning Programme.

There is a SDLP for each taught day of the course. This comprises of a series of elements which mostly delineate the taught parts of the course. The delegate is required to work through a series of steps on the SDLP which facilitate development of knowledge and skill in each of these elements.
These steps are:

Taught
Attending the taught course will fulfil these elements.

Read and précis
Delegates are required to read an identified article from the course reference list and critically evaluate it using the sheet provided. Each delegate can select as many articles as they wish. The critical evaluation will need to be discussed with the supervising clinician.

Observe if appropriate
This is for the supervisee to observe their supervisor complete the element. It is for the supervisee and the supervisor to negotiate how many observations of this element are required.

Be observed/explain to supervisor
This section is for the supervisee to be observed conducting the element. It is for the supervisee and the supervisor to negotiate how many observations of this element are required.

Explain to non professionals
In this step the supervisee consolidates their knowledge and displays their skill in presenting the information to a non professional.

Confident
This step is for the supervisee to identify that they feel confident with that particular element. If they don’t reach this step after completing the previous steps it allows the supervisee to renegotiate further supported practice for this element.

Competent
This step is for the supervisor to complete when they are satisfied that the supervisee can practice independently in this element.

Competence confirmed
This is for the supervisor +/- the supervisee.

Course Details

Course Objectives
The course will allow delegates to develop their knowledge and skills within a taught environment and then enable them to engage in work based learning to empower them to develop and manage their own learning with supervisory support. The learning outcomes from the course reflect the knowledge and skills framework which indicate how delegates will operate within a critically appraised evidence based practice upon completion of the course. Attendance on the course will further support and enhance delegate’s skills in managing their own learning and CPD and facilitate them to share their learning and skill development with others in their workplace.

Course & Delegate Evaluation
There will not be an examination for this course. There will be a rigorous evaluation of delegates learning whilst engaged with the course and subsequent work place learning.
The delegates will also be required to evaluate the progression of their learning and career development as a consequence of the course and provide supporting evidence of this. They will need to provide supporting evidence from their supervisor of competence and of changes in behaviour as a consequence of the course and sustainability of these changes.  This will be done via questionnaire and submitted to the external examiner within 1 year of commencing the taught component of the course.

To pass the course delegates will be required to;

  • Attend the taught days of the course.
  • To complete their self directed learning programme, their own and their supervisors evaluations.
  • Submit these.
  • Submission will be evaluated based on:

◊   Completion of SDLP.
◊   Evidence of date and progression through SDLP.
◊   Completed competence and competence confirmed for all elements undertaken.
◊   Completed questionnaire.
◊   Written evidence of change in clinical practice as a result of learning obtained.

  • Complete supervisors questionaire.
  • Written evidence of noticeable changes in activity and performance, and sustainability of these changes.

Upon successful completion of the above, the delegate will receive a certificate acknowledging achievement of this RCSLT accredited course.
In the event of any aspect being unsuccessful the delegate will receive detailed feedback from the external examiner and a time frame within which to complete revisions.
