- Participants will have appropriate understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the normal swallowing process and be able to use this information clinically
- Participants will have understanding of the normal development of eating and drinking.
- Participants will be aware of the medical conditions, which predispose dysphagia and use this information clinically
- Participants will be able to identify the features of an abnormal swallow
- Participants will reflect their understanding of the importance of the relationship between respiration and swallowing in clinical practice.
- Participants will understand the possible implications medication can have on the swallowing process.
- Participants will understand how the environment can affect eating and drinking in children/adults with a learning disability and use this knowledge to influence their management.
- Participants will have understanding of a number of screening and diagnostic tools for the assessment of dysphagia
- Participants will be able to conduct a number of assessments analyse results and propose hypothesis driven management plans
- Participants will learn about the principles of intervention in paediatric/ALD dysphagia management
- Participants will learn about the range of motor and sensory feeding disorders that occur in children/ALD and therapeutic interventions
- Participants will learn about and apply a number of specific management techniques for different disorders.
- Participants will consolidate their learning with experiential practical exercises and continued work based learning
- Participants will be aware of and be able to apply risk assessment in relation to dysphagia
- Participants will be made aware of the RCSLT guidelines on working with dysphagia
Participants will be made aware of the most up to date RCSLT position on competencies
