Course Objectives

  1. Participants will have appropriate understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the normal swallowing process and be able to use this information clinically
  2. Participants will have understanding of the normal development of eating and drinking.
  3. Participants will be aware of the medical conditions, which predispose dysphagia and use this information clinically
  4. Participants will be able to identify the features of an abnormal swallow
  5. Participants will reflect their understanding of  the importance of the relationship between respiration and swallowing in clinical practice.
  6. Participants will understand the possible implications medication can have on the swallowing process.
  7. Participants will understand how the environment can affect eating and drinking in children/adults with a learning disability and use this knowledge to influence their management.
  8. Participants will have understanding of a number of screening and diagnostic tools for the assessment of dysphagia
  9. Participants will be able to conduct a number of assessments analyse results and propose hypothesis driven management plans
  10. Participants will learn about the principles of intervention in paediatric/ALD dysphagia management
  11. Participants will learn about the range of motor and sensory feeding disorders that occur in children/ALD and therapeutic interventions
  12. Participants will learn about and apply a number of specific management techniques for different disorders.
  13. Participants will consolidate their learning with experiential practical exercises and continued work based learning
  14. Participants will be aware of and be able to apply risk assessment in relation to dysphagia
  15. Participants will be made aware of the RCSLT guidelines on working with dysphagia

Participants will be made aware of the most up to date RCSLT position on competencies
