Cadbury Club, Bournville. Birmingham.

When?             Wednesday 11th July

Cost?              £90 (A reduction in this price will be offered to any graduates who are currently out of work.)

Participants:      This course is aimed at speech and language therapists, Assistants and Early Year practitioners in Nurseries and Children’s centres

This is the first in a series of “how to..” courses which are aimed at speech and language therapists who have recently qualified, speech and language therapy assistants and in some cases other professionals working alongside speech and language therapists.

This first course will give delegates a mixture of theory and practical clinical skills that will enable them to successfully organise, run and evaluate the outcomes of a pre school language group.

With an increased pressure on resources, running a group can be an effective method of providing therapy to children with language difficulties and also en-skill their parents and caregivers to make maximum use of opportunities to facilitate language development.

Delegates will leave the course with a group programme, structure and unique resources to enable them to run their own group straight away.

Attending this course will give you:

·       Information on “what is communication?”

·       The current theory on Play.

·       Background to  Margaret Carr’s  learning stories approach to the 4 D’s   (describe, document, discuss, decide)

·       The knowledge and skills necessary to work with and effectively engage parents and hard to reach communities.

·       The background to the early years foundation stage and its links with communication

·       Skills necessary to provide effective feedback.

·       The ability to set a baseline, evaluate and communicate your outcomes.

·       Practical resources to enable you to run a six week group cycle.

·       Information on a range of organisations that may be of use within your clinical work

A large part of the course will be practical development of ideas and resources. These will be freely shared with all delegates on the course so that every attendee takes home a unique set of resources that can be immediately put to use in running a group.

Is this course right for you?

With limited resources for training it is important that any course you attend meets your needs over and above what you can obtain within your work place. As clinicians we understand that going on a course does not necessarily mean that you can easily implement what you have learned from the study into your day to day work. We believe that it is essential that our courses offer you a clinically relevant set of skills that you can implement as soon as you return to work. We hope that the following information will help you to decide whether this course is right for you…

Who is the course aimed at?

The course is aimed at: Newly qualified and band 5 speech and language therapists, speech and language therapy assistants, and student speech and language therapists, Early Years Practitioners in nurseries and children’s centres.

What are the main objectives of the course?

·        To receive practical and clinically relevant “How-to.. ideas” and  theoretical approaches on running pre- school language groups.

·        To receive opportunities to plan and make resources necessary to run a group on their return to the work place.

·        To have a good  understanding of the  Early Years Foundation Stage  and communication

·        To have strategies and ideas on engaging and empowering parents.

·        To understand the importance of and have the skills to measure and communicate outcomes of their intervention.

How will attending this course affect my clinical practice?

You will have the knowledge and skills necessary to plan and run a successful pre-school language group.
